Phase One buys Leaf Imageing
6/25/2009       2:00:04 PM
James

In a press release today it was announced that Phase One will be buying Leaf Imaging. (see the press release link below.)

Phase One has been the dominant player in the high end digital capture market for the past 5 years due in no small part to the versatility of it's Capture One Pro software which allows tethered digital capture from Phase One medium format digital backs and also high end consumer grade DSLR's. Capture One Pro has also been the most feature rich digital capture program available to professional users and is considered by many to be the best software to use when it comes to processing RAW files.

Phase One and Leaf medium format digital backs have consistently dominated the professional digital capture market; with Hasselblad and Sinar combined only accounting for somewhere around 10% (based on our surveys in the NYC and LA markets.).

Certainly the current debate about which digital back produces the best digital file will now become mute. And by the release of Capture One Pro V.6.0 we could probably expect to see the best of both worlds creating a medium format capture system that is second to none.

Probably the best thing in my opinion that could come out of this would be the possibility of being able to use a Phase One back on an AFi body. As I have stated previously; I believe that the Leaf AFi camera is currently the best functioning and most versitile (in terms of lens options) medium format camera currently on the market. Those that follow this site may have noticed the conspcuious absense of any commentary by me regarding the Phase One 645 Camera since its release more than a year ago.

Imagine the possibilities:

Phase One digital Back + LEAF AFi body +  Carl Zeiss Lens = Unbeatable combination

COPENHAGEN and TEL AVIV, June 25, 2009 -- Phase One A/S, in conjunction with senior management employees of Leaf, today announced that they have created a new entity, Leaf Imaging Ltd., to purchase certain assets of the Leaf camera business. The assets include the "Leaf" brand product names, engineering design and production tools. The new entity will also enter into an intellectual property license with Eastman Kodak Company that is royalty-bearing to Kodak. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kodak gonna take my Kodachrome away e ay
6/22/2009       12:00:00 AM

After 74 years Kodak will be taking Kodachrome away. Kodaks press release here.

KODACHROME became the world’s first commercially successful color film after it's introduction in 1935. Sales have declined in recent years as photographers turned to newer KODAK Films or to other digital imaging technologies.  KODACHROME now accounts for just a fraction of one percent of Kodak’s total sales of still-picture films.

Kodachrome 25 which has been gone a long time is still one of favorite films. Back in teh day when I worked at a photo lab in Boston we did a mural print from a 35mm Kodachrome slide that was nearly grainles at 6 Feet x 9 feet. It was seriously 1 of the best films Kodak ever made.

My other personal favorite film that is also gone, was Tech Pan; a B&W orthochromatic film rated at 25 ASA that I shot and processed for 100 ASA that resulted in grainless 24" X 36"  prints with nearly a 20 stop tonal range.

There has been a discussion in another photography forum regarding the securing of images on web sites.

Several people have made suggestions such as “Right click disable”, or disabling key strokes on Mac & PC that allow for screen capture, and even one very cool script that someone created for a Flash web site which creates a watermark on their Flash embedded image if someone attempts a screen capture.

MAC Group to represent Phase One for marketing.

    James via email(S)

Saturday I woke up to an interesting email.

" Did you hear which digital backs the MAC group started to represent

and distribute as of yesterday?  " (Friday)

And after several emails to get confirmation it turns out that Mac Group who currently handles the marketing and sales for most if not all of the major brands (see their site for the names) used on a commercial photo shoot is now adding Phase One to their line up. This is interesting since they also represent LEAF; although the LEAF logo conspicuously disappeared from the MAC group web site nearly a year ago.

I'm sure that we will be seeing a phase one or Mac group official press release soon.

Leaf Releases Leaf Capture 11.2.7 Software
    6/5/2009       12:00:00 AM
    Email - Leaf

Leaf is pleased to announce the release of an update to its highly acclaimed Leaf Capture software. Leaf Capture 11.2.7 delivers improvements for Leaf’s latest digital back and camera models, the AFi-II 10 and Aptus-II 10, offering an extended ISO range and improved shooting burst speeds.

Of special note, is Leaf’s new ‘Lens Calibration’ feature, which allows Leaf AFi-II 10 and Aptus-II 10 users to create their own custom lens calibration files for any lens they have.  These calibration files ‘describe’ certain characteristics of the lens so that photographers can obtain the absolute best image quality available.

For Leaf AFi-II 10 and Aptus-II 10 customers who do not wish to go to the extent of making their own custom lens calibration files, Leaf provides a separate CD, which contains factory defined lens calibration files for some of the most commonly used lenses.  These files are customized and tested individually for each sensor.

Photo Assistant Boot Camp - June 21-22 2009

Digital Tech Workshop (DTW) - June 27-28 2009   This workshop will cover Capture 1Pro V.3.7.9

Due to the numerous software changes and updates Phase One has made and will continue to make to Capture 1Pro V.4.x.x

It seemed pointless for me to create a Capture 1Pro V.4.x.x presentation at this time specifically because Phase One will be releasing Capture 1 Pro V.5 some time around September if not sooner. This release is expected to again offer more feature rich options and would mean additional rewriting of our course book and rebuilding of the course structure itself.

Those attending this June 2009 DTW will receive a $125.00 discount on any future DTW

when we do offer a Capture 1Pro V.4.x.x or Capture 1Pro V.5.x DTW

This offer is limited to 1 year from June 28 2009 and is not transferable to another person or party. (photographers sending their staff may transfer this offer in house only.)

Probably the greatest photographer you’ve never heard of.
    4/3/2009       7:23:40 AM
    JamesNYC
I worked with Al Fisher when I lived in Boston.

He was the most knowledgeable, technically and esthetically perfect photographer I have ever had the privilege to work with.

What Al Fisher had over other photographers was his ability to see light.

Not just the lights on the set once everything was set up, he saw the entire lighting scenario in his head before the setup even began. He knew exactly where he wanted the angle and direction and fall off to occur because he had envisioned the finished image in his minds eye before the first light stand was setup.

Working with Al was unlike working at any other photographers studio where you may walk in and there’s a hustle & bustle of people running around trying to look busy or “creating the show” for clients.

Working with Al was more like being invited to a fine dinning experience.

One in which the chief would gradually reveal the secrets to his recipes through the process as he prepared the meal.

In some respects entering the studio was like entering a museum.

This in itself was interesting because Al’s studio (at the time I work with him) was behind and adjacent to “The Rat” or The Rathskeller” which was a rock and roll bar where the Police first played to 6 people when they first came to America to promote there first album.

AL had some of the oldest photo studio equipment, lights, movie lights, and studio stands and cameras that I had ever seen. It was all used regularly and it was all in immaculate condition.

Al’s pride and joy was his Platinum and Palladium prints.

In his studio he had 2 darkrooms, one for the black and white processing and one for the Platinum and Palladium processing and printing. Each process had its own set of measures, beakers, trays, tanks and Accoutrements to avoid even the suggestion of cross contamination. I know that I have and will never see another darkroom as spotless and pristine as those in the AL fisher studio.

    Open New Markets with Video

    Jon Hornstein

Once upon a time photography and videography rarely crossed paths. In virtually all markets for visual communication (commercial, editorial, corporate, documentary, events) photography and videography were provided by completely separate individuals or crews, the fees came from different budgets and the client base rarely overlapped.

But that era is rapidly fading. Until recently, the primary venue for still photography was print material of some sort such as magazines, books, brochures and albums. Video was primarily experienced over broadcast or cable channels or distributed to consumers and corporate customers on tape or DVD.

You SUCK as a photo assistant if:
    3/4/2009       10:28:33 AM
    Various

    Ok so let me clarify.

A while back a photographer friend of mine told me about the youTube series 'you suck at Photoshop' from that we started coming up with a list of some of the inane things we've seen on photo shoots. Sadly some of these examples I've seen first hand and many I've seen in the last 3-6 months from people marketing themselves as photo assistants. This is suppose to be both humorous and a bit disappointing.

You SUCK as a photo assistant if:

Or  20 things you should never do as a photo assistant.

    1) The call time for the location van is 7:00 Am and you show up at 8:15

    2) You sit down to eat breakfast with the client and read the paper while the rest of the crew is setting up lights and cameras.

    3) You tell the photographer or the other assistant that you know how to use a piece of equipment when you’ve never seen it before.

    Archiving film and old negatives.
    3/3/2009       2:37:55 PM
    James

There have been a few discussions in other photo groups and forums concerning the archiving of film and the possible degradation over time.

Having worked in photo processing labs for more than 10 years back in the 80's   and 90's I came to find that there is/was a huge difference in the manor that a customer’s film was handled or processed.

Regardless of whether you took your film to a 1 hour mini lab, a professional photo lab using a dip and dunk system or one of the many bulk film developing companies around the country that would run miles of film through a continues film line; it all comes down to the quality control that each lab implemented.

As some of you may recall back in 1989', Kodak tried to implement a Kodak Certified Processing certification associated with a number of labs.

This entailed mixing the chemistry to exacting standards and even checking the specific gravity of each batch for process such as Ciba-Chrome and E-6 or color reversal film. In addition each film processing machine would have film test strip run every 4 hours.

That lasted for all of 12 months before the photo labs decided that the extra expense of following such a stringent model was not cost effective.

One of the hardest things for a photographer to do is edit for their portfolio. Getting down to 50 or so images can be a relatively painless process. It's whittling down to the final selection that can be difficult, stressful, even paralyzing.

Photography is a service, but it's also an art form. It's a job but also a reflection of who you are and what you have to offer. This dual nature can make the editing decisions for your portfolio especially difficult. From a marketing perspective, you want to show a clearly identifiable style so the client will know what to expect if they hire you. As an artist, showing work in only a single style can feel limiting and artificial. But the bottom line is that if you're an independent professional photographer, then you're also a business. This means you need a clearly identifiable brand in the eyes of photo buyers so they can distinguish you from everyone else.

    Do Photo Assistants Have rights?
    1/27/2009       10:21:21 PM
    via email

The following was emailed to me this afternoon.

    Hey James.

I have a question for you concerning the rights of a photo assistant.  Over the past few years I have worked with a lot of photographers in  New York and I have noticed quite a lot of physical, verbal and mental  abuse towards assistants. It seems that assistant have NO rights  whatsoever. If someone complains that they were harassed, they get  fired. I guess my question is why isn't there a union yet? Is this the  only industry where people have no rights? I  am also well aware that  there are many photographers out there who simply bill an assistant  for one price to a client and don't give the assistant that amount.  Instead the photographer pockets the money. A know a lot of assistants  in the city and every single one has some horror story about a  photographer abusing them or not paying and the photographer gets away  with it and continues to do so. It seems the film industry and even  the broadway have figured out without a union you get abused. This  industry needs to change someday! A NYC photo assistant

2008 in review and our predictions.

It's no surprise to anyone that 2008 was absolutely abominable.

This year has brought changes to our industry and economic difficulties that most have never seen and others were content to leave behind 20 or more years ago.

Advertisers have cut or killed their Ad budgets for 2008 and 2009.

Magazines are dropping from site even faster than photographers day rates have over the last 8 years.

You don't need any further proof than to look at Conde Nast and other publishers whom have folded several of their magazines and limited issues for others.

Smart rental studios have repositioned themselves as full service production studios/companies.

Photo Marketing Resolutions for the New Year
    12/31/2008       8:54:03 PM
    Jon Hornstein

The coming year is shaping up to be a challenging one for most photographers. The economic downturn accelerated the decline of print advertising, which directly or indirectly, provides much of the economic base for professional photography. Ad dollars that have migrated to online advertising don't support photography nearly as well as print. Add to this the continued growth of microstock, and the downward price pressure it brings to many areas of photography, and you have the recipe for a very difficult year.

But it's not all doom and gloom. While it will be more difficult to prosper, or even survive as a photographer in 2009, the profession will not simply go away. But it will contract and become even more competitive, so what can a photographer do to increase the odds that they will buck the trend and succeed in a difficult environment?

Looking ahead to 2009, photographers would do well to make the following resolutions for the new year:

Why you need to learn to use the BCC option on your email client.
    12/22/2008

This holiday season more people are sending out their seasons greetings via email then I've ever seen before.

And most are makeing a rather costly mistake.

You've spent a good deal of time and probably money to gather those very valuable emails of:

art directors, photo editors & others private emails; so why would you just give that information away?

Too often people seem to be in such a rush to get out their emails that they "CC" everyone in their email address book.

When you do this you are giving away all of those valuable emails that most people would other wise have to research for themselves, or pay ADBase or Agecny Access for.

The very simple act of using the "BCC" option when sending to your entire list will hide those valuable emails that you worked so hard to aquire.

So to all of you that sent me those email holiday greetings,

I would also like to thank you for  sending me the more than 3000 email addresses to your clients that I won't have to pay for.

Just busting on you, I've already had all those email addesses.
