The new 1ProPhoto.com workshops

by JamesNYC 3. March 2010 06:20
A new Capture One Pro Software was recently released and we've added new dates for all of our workshops.
Our comprehensive 2 day hands on Digital Tech Workshop featuring Capture 1 Pro V.5.1.x
will be April 10-11 2010 http://www.captureoneproworkshop.com
In this workshop we will be covering tethered capture with Phase One P+ series backs, and now Leaf digital backs.
With Hasse H & V series cameras, Mamiya RZ67 / 645, and the sliding back for 4x5 cameras, this in addition to the usual collection of Canon DSLR's that we present.
This workshop is suitable for anyone looking for in depth coverage of Capture One Pro.
By popular demand we have created a new 1 day seminar featuring the new Capture One Pro V.5.1.x April 24 2010 http://www.captureoneproseminar.com
This 1 day seminar is limited to the software only.
We do not cover cameras during this event. Please see the site for complete details.
We've created this workshop after it was requested by photographers, art directors, producers, and photo assistants that were interested in learning capture one pro
but do not need the hands on aspect of our Digital Tech Workshop.
This is also great for people that have worked with older versions of Capture One Pro and wish to become familiar with the new V.5.1.x software
Our revamped Photo Assistant Boot Camp & studio lighting basics workshop
Now featuring lighting from: ProFoto, Broncolor, Kobold, KinoFlo, Arri and more. March 27-28 2010 http://www.photoassistantbootcamp.com
This is 2 days that I have crammed full of studio lighting and grip setups.
I cover metering, ratios, color temp and color correction simply because I believe it's important in a professional studio setting.
We generally cover about 12-18 different lighting situations over the 2 days.

Canon Announces EOS 5D Mk II Firmware Upgrade 2.0.3

by JamesNYC 2. March 2010 13:48

Canon today pre-announces the release of a firmware update for the multiple award-winning EOS 5D Mark II. Originally announced in late 2009, the update adds 24 and 25 frames per second (fps) recording to the camera’s EOS MOVIE video function, and will be available as a free download from the middle of March.

Developed following feedback from photographers and cinematographers, Firmware 2.0.3 further enhances the EOS 5D Mark II’s excellent video performance. The addition of new frame rates expands the camera’s video potential, providing filmmakers with the ability to shoot 1080p Full HD footage at 24fps (actual 23.976fps) – the optimum frame rate for cinematic video. 25fps support at both 1920×1080 and 640×480 resolutions will allow users to film at the frame rate required for the PAL broadcast standard, while the new firmware will also change the 30fps option to the NTSC video standard of 29.97fps.

PDN is conducting a survey of photo assistants

by JamesNYC 2. March 2010 11:16

PDN is conducting a survey of photo assistants: what they earn, what skills are in demand, how they find work, what skills they would like to learn.  We need your input if you have assisted in the past 18 months. And we need your help spreading the word about the survey to other assistants and digital techs that you may know. The survey results will be published on PDNOnline in March.

It’s a totally anonymous survey, and takes about 10 minutes to fill out. Here’s the link:

Last Call with Carson Daly shooting with Canon 5DMKII

by JamesNYC 2. March 2010 11:16
So I'm wondering if any of my fellow insomniacs saw that Last Call with Carson Daly was shooting part of the show with a Canon 5DMKII last night.
I could be wrong but it was the first time I saw them shooting this format.
Just further proof that these new Hybrid DSLR's are popping up everywhere and photographers REALLY need to get on board if they haven't already.

What every photography school student needs to know.

by JamesNYC 21. February 2010 14:00
During the last 6 years of teaching workshops promoted through my sites, I have come in contact with hundreds of photo school / college grads that have felt cheated after spending up wards and beyond $160,000 for an education that has left them unprepared and unqualified for working in the real world of commercial photography.

So here is some of what I have come to find, and what they have personally revealed to me, in no specific order.
Unless you absolutely positively can not live a full life with out taking pictures or making images every single day of your life, do not pursue a career in photography.

If you are the type of person that needs emotional, financial, and job stability do not get into photography.

Know your photographic history. you can not move forward without acknowledging the past.
And know whom from the past you can stealthy "barrow" from.

If you believe that by taking photography classes in high school, college, or other will make you a photographer it won't

If after taking photography classes you are under the impression that you will be able to move to a major photo market like New York and become the next Avedon you will not.
Photographers are competing on a world stage and there are thousands of highly skilled over qualified photographers that have worked as assistants, digital techs, lighting techs, and producers for some of the most famous and infamous photographers in the world and you will have to wait your turn behind them as you are competing for the few jobs available.
(Many of those have been doing this for nearly 20 years and have been cultivating business contacts for as long.)

Phase One releases another BETA V.5.x.x to it's BETA testers

by JamesNYC 11. February 2010 04:54

Phase One sent out thir latest BETA release of Capture One Pro V.5.x.x to BETA testers this morning.

More so than any other time in the last 6 years that I've been using Capture One Pro, Phase One appears to be putting more effort in to the development of Capture One Pro then ever before.

The most obvious reason being their assimilation of Leaf digital nearly a year ago.  With the pace of development I would not be surprised to see a version of Capture One Pro V.5.x.x that is able to handle all aspects of the Leaf Aptus backs by spring time or late summer at the latest.

Also expect to see greater connectivity for all cameras systems, including those not officialy realesed yet. Greater parity for Mac and PC users.

Magic Lantern Firmware Unlocks the Canon 5D Mark II's A/V Potential

by JamesNYC 4. February 2010 04:11

The new Magic Lantern firmware improves audio recording by adding onscreen level meters, disabling automatic gain control, and adding manual gain control—combined improvements that make for the excellent audio you hear in this clip. The new Magic Lanternfirmware enables zebra stripes (they mark the portions of your image that are overexposed) and the various crop marks for 16:9, 2.35:1 and 4:3—the most common aspect ratios that you'll want to shoot.
