Magic Lantern Firmware Unlocks the Canon 5D Mark II's A/V Potential

by JamesNYC 4. February 2010 04:11

The new Magic Lantern firmware improves audio recording by adding onscreen level meters, disabling automatic gain control, and adding manual gain control—combined improvements that make for the excellent audio you hear in this clip. The new Magic Lanternfirmware enables zebra stripes (they mark the portions of your image that are overexposed) and the various crop marks for 16:9, 2.35:1 and 4:3—the most common aspect ratios that you'll want to shoot.

Now is the time to buy that medium format Digital back.

by JamesNYC 17. December 2009 16:19
So why is now a great time for you to consider buying a new medium format digital back?
Because this has been the worst year for photo equipment sales in decades.
Except for sales of the Canon 5DMKII which has been the best selling camera this year.
But for those dealers selling digital capture backs sales have been down to non-existent.
A few years ago I had an interesting conversation with a digital tech who previously worked for a company whose primary focus was medium format digital back sales. He told me that as the end of the year would draw near the sales team would ramp up their sales phone calls.
Sometimes checking in with potential clients a couple of times a week.
In one instance just days before December 31st this company needed to sell just one more Digital back to meet their minimum sales quota for the year.
They had one potential client and they just wouldn't give up.
They finally went so far as to sell the P25 digital back for a thousand dollars less than their cost just to make that last sale of the year.
The thing with dealers is that in order to retain their certified dealership status they need to meet a yearly sales quota.
If their not able to meet that sales quota they could potentially lose their dealership status.

Now I certainly would never encourage anyone to go so far as to nickel & dime a company in order to get a great deal.
But sometimes it's possible to find a really good deal from a reputable company.

Where ever you go for your pro photo equipment sales even more important than the sale price is the support and service you'll receive after they've made the sale. During the nearly 6 years that we've been teaching our Digital Tech Workshop featuring Capture 1 Pro more of our workshop attendees both digital techs and photographers, many from NYC, have made their final purchases from either Capture integration in Atlanta Ga. or from Digital Fusion in La.
Both of these companies have consistently proven to be the most reliable when it comes to sales, service and support.
This is based upon our personal experience and that of photographers and digital techs we speak with regularly.
